The Design Story

Although many who have read Through the Looking Glass and others books on Alice's adventures call to mind vivid environments and whimsical characters, the design for this book cover is more modest in its approach. Juxtaposing the more grounded nature of Alice against the exotic and colorful contents of the book, the focus of the cover is on typography. Using letterforms pulled from the two typefaces used in the book, the "A" of Alice is represented large as she is the main character. The remainder of her name is reflected inside the leg, creating a window through the letter to reveal the bursts of color that await the reader inside the book itself.

Back Cover

Despite the modest approach to the book cover, it holds a quaint aesthetic that harkens back to the year 1872, when the novel was published. The back cover carries the theme of opposites, alluding to the events within the book, and gives the overall design of the covers a more mature playfulness that would appeal to a more nostalgic reader.
