The Design Story

Pokémon Classics was designed for fans of the Pokémon game series, playing on the nostalgia we have for the games we had when we were younger. The product is a combination of two bookbinding techniques: shadowbox and accordion. The exterior of the product is a shadowbox replica of a Gameboy Color, built to scale, depicting a battle between two starter Pokémon final evolutions. The shadowbox features a slot in the back, just like a real Gameboy Color, for the accordion book to fit into. The accordion book is double-sided; featuring the Pokédex entries for the 6 Pokémon on the collectors team on one-side and descriptions of what makes them so memorable on the other.

If taken further, this product could become a way for the Pokémon Company to interact with their vast fanbase. A fan could visit the Pokémon website and customize their own collectible by choosing which starter Pokémon to depict in the shadowbox and what Pokémon would make up their team. They could also write their own reverse-side descriptions for why they chose those Pokémon and choose what game cartridge they want.
