The Design Story

There are many experiences we face as a society, one of which is shared commonly amongst us but is considered taboo to discuss openly: finances. Statements is a book that exposes the author, myself, as financially vulnerable. This vulnerability becomes a focus in the design of the publication, using it to draw the reader in to connect with the author through the shared experience of financial anxiety. By designing the cover as a familiar bank statement, the reader is overcome with a feeling of taboo - is this someone's mail? As they open and peruse the pages, they feel anxious not only because they are reading something intimate about another person but also because they can see the distress on the pages. The publication itself then becomes a reflection of not only the author, but of the reader, too, as they form connections through shared experiences.

Bonding through shared experiences allows us to grow and become stronger people. It allows us to understand ourselves and others more deeply and promotes healthy self-growth, making us more confident in ourselves and empathetic towards others. The goal of Statements is to both intimidate and inspire; by opening myself up to scrutiny and judgement, I hope that I also inspire the reader to be more honest with themselves and others.
